Display Models
At Darkside Snowboards, we are a brick-and-mortar snowboard shop with inventory shared between our retail locations and online store. Because of this, some items ordered through our webstore may be display models from our sales floor. In these cases, product packaging may show minor wear, altered seals, or may not be in completely factory-fresh condition. However, all products sold on our website are brand new and unused unless otherwise clearly noted in the product description (such as demo snowboards or used gear). If you ever have questions about the condition of a specific item before ordering, feel free to contact us and we’ll be happy to help.
How to Choose Your Snowboard Setup
Your setup should match how you ride—and where you want to take it next. Whether you’re buying your first board or adding something new to the lineup, we’re here to help you find the right fit.
Start with comfortable, properly fitted boots, choose a board that suits your size and riding style, and match it with compatible bindings. Here’s what to look for.
Start With Your Boots
Boots are the foundation of your setup. The right fit helps you stay comfortable, control your board, and get more out of your day.
Finding the Right Fit
Don’t assume your snowboard boot size will match your everyday shoe size. Start with your foot measurements and the manufacturer’s size chart, then try on a few models. Different boots fit different foot shapes—even within the same brand.
A properly fitted boot should feel snug throughout, with your toes lightly touching the front when standing upright. As you bend your knees into a riding stance, pressure at your toes should ease. Your heel should stay secure with minimal lift.
Snug is good. Pain, numbness, or curled toes are signs to reassess the fit.
Liners settle and pack out with use, so a boot that feels roomy in the shop may become too loose after a few days. Wear one pair of thin snowboard socks when trying on boots.
For the best results, visit our crew for an in-person fitting. Depending on the boot, heat molding and footbeds can help fine-tune the fit.
Choosing Boot Flex
-
Soft: Easier to flex, with a playful feel for relaxed riding, presses, and freestyle.
-
Medium: A versatile balance of comfort, support, and response for riding the whole mountain.
-
Stiff: More support and a precise feel for aggressive turns, higher speeds, and demanding terrain.
Flex ratings vary between brands. Your weight, strength, ability, and preferences all affect how a boot feels.
Lacing Systems
Traditional Laces: Familiar and adjustable, letting you fine-tune tension along the boot.
BOA: Dial-operated tightening that makes adjustments quick and convenient. Many dual-dial systems offer separate adjustment zones, but the layout varies by model.
Speed Lace: Pull-cord systems designed for quick tightening, often with separate upper and lower zones.
Hybrid: Combines traditional laces with a dial or another tightening system. Depending on the boot, the dial may control heel hold or a specific fit zone.
Choose the system that gives you the best fit and feels easiest to use.
Choose Your Snowboard
Snowboard Length
Start with the recommended rider weight range for the specific board. Then consider your ability, preferred terrain, and how you want the board to ride.
Within an appropriate size range:
-
A shorter board generally feels easier to maneuver and more playful.
-
A longer board generally offers more stability and float.
Height can help provide context, but the old chin-to-nose test doesn’t tell the whole story. Shape, flex, and construction all affect sizing.
Volume-shifted boards typically use extra width and surface area to let you ride a shorter length. Always follow the sizing guidance for that model.
Snowboard Width
Your board should be wide enough to accommodate your boots without excessive toe or heel overhang.
A little boot overhang is normal. Too much can cause your boots to contact the snow during turns. A board that’s unnecessarily wide can take more effort to move from edge to edge.
Boot size is a starting point, but boot footprint, binding angles, and board shape also matter. Larger boots often need a wider board, though a “wide” label alone doesn’t guarantee the right fit.
If you’re unsure, we can help match your boots to the right board width.
Snowboard Flex
Soft: Easy to bend and maneuver. Often a good fit for learning, jibbing, buttering, and playful riding.
Medium: A versatile option that balances forgiveness with support for riding a little bit of everything.
Stiff: More supportive and responsive under strong input. Often suited to powerful riders, higher speeds, carving, and technical terrain.
A heavier rider will generally flex the same board more easily than a lighter rider. Flex numbers are most useful when comparing boards within the same brand.
Understand Board Shapes
True Twin
A symmetrical shape with a matching flex pattern in the nose and tail, designed for a consistent feel in either direction.
A good fit for: Park laps, freestyle, and frequent switch riding.
Directional Twin
Combines a twin-inspired feel with directional features, such as a longer nose, setback stance, or different flex through the nose and tail. The details vary by model.
A good fit for: Riders who want freestyle versatility with extra support for riding the whole mountain.
Directional
Designed primarily for riding in one direction. Depending on the board, features may include a longer nose, tapered shape, setback stance, or directional flex.
A good fit for: Groomers, carving, trees, freeriding, and powder. Many directional boards can still be ridden switch.
Understand Camber Profiles
A board’s profile is its curve when viewed from the side. It influences how the board turns, holds an edge, pops, and floats—but it works together with the board’s shape, flex, and construction.
Traditional Camber
An upward arch through the middle of the board that loads under the rider’s weight.
Camber generally delivers a responsive feel, strong edge engagement, and good pop. It can feel less forgiving of mistakes, though a softer cambered board can still be a good learning option.
Rocker / Reverse Camber
A profile that rises toward the nose and tail from the middle of the board.
Rocker generally feels loose, playful, and easy to pivot, with helpful float in soft snow. Depending on the design, it may feel less planted on firm snow or at speed.
Flat
A mostly flat section through the middle of the board, sometimes paired with lifted tips.
Flat profiles can offer a predictable, balanced feel between the liveliness of camber and the looseness of rocker.
Hybrid Profiles
Hybrid boards combine camber, rocker, and sometimes flat sections.
-
Camber between the feet with rocker toward the tips: Often combines support and pop with smoother turn entry and added float.
-
Rocker between the feet with camber beneath each foot: Often combines an easy-pivoting feel with support and edge engagement underfoot.
Hybrid profiles vary widely. Two boards with the same general profile can ride very differently, so use the profile as one part of the decision.
Match Your Board to Your Riding
All Mountain
For riders who want one board for groomers, side hits, trees, occasional park laps, and fresh snow. This is a great place to start if you want versatility or are still figuring out your favorite terrain.
Park / Freestyle
For jumps, rails, presses, and switch riding. Twin shapes are popular, but flex depends on your priorities: softer boards tend to suit presses and jibs, while more supportive boards can suit jumps and faster approaches.
Freeride / Carving
For riders who prioritize turning, speed, and more demanding terrain. Look for a shape, flex, and sidecut that suit the turns you want to make and the conditions you ride.
Powder
For maximizing float and making soft-snow turns feel easier. Many powder boards use a wider or longer nose, taper, rocker, or a setback stance. Some are short and wide; others use more length.
You don’t need a dedicated powder board to enjoy a storm day, but it can be a great addition to your lineup.
Riding Vermont?
Our conditions can change from firm morning groomers to soft afternoon laps—or fresh snow in the trees.
For a versatile Vermont setup, consider predictable edge engagement, a flex you can comfortably control, and a shape that suits your favorite terrain. If you mainly ride park, prioritize freestyle performance. If you spend your days carving and chasing storms, a more directional setup may make sense.
Tell us where you ride and what you enjoy. We’ll help narrow it down.
Choose Your Bindings
Binding Size
Use the binding manufacturer’s size chart, then check the fit with your actual boots.
Your boots should sit securely in the bindings, with straps positioned correctly and the toe and heel reasonably centered over the board. Binding adjustments help fine-tune the fit, but they can’t fix a board or binding that’s the wrong size.
Binding Flex
-
Soft: A forgiving, playful feel with more freedom of movement.
-
Medium: A versatile balance of support and flexibility.
-
Stiff: A more direct, responsive feel for riders who want strong support.
Aim for boots, bindings, and a board that complement each other. They don’t need identical flex ratings, but the overall setup should suit your riding.
Board Compatibility
Check that the exact binding model and mounting hardware work with your board.
Common mounting systems include 2x4 inserts and Burton’s Channel. Older Burton boards may use a 3D mounting pattern, which requires a compatible disc.
Burton EST bindings are designed specifically for the Channel. Other bindings may support multiple mounting systems with the appropriate disc and hardware.
Step On Systems
Step On bindings require compatible Step On boots. Standard snowboard boots will not work with them.
Check the manufacturer’s compatibility and sizing charts for the exact boot and binding combination. Other quick-entry systems work differently, so confirm the requirements before buying.
